I started CrossFit at the end of May 2012. I went because my husband, Josh, told me it was a great workout and a great way to get in shape after having my baby (Benjamin). I continued to keep going back because Josh and I went together as a team. Even though I tried giving up at least 100x, I never actually did, and it really paid off. 3 years later, I am still loving it!

My greatest memory of CFGB is actually really hard to answer. Most of my memories aretara 1 really because of the amazing people and the relationships I have formed with the other members and the coaches of CFGB. I love that we are like one big, strong, amazing family!

I am a stay at home Mom to two young boys, which is truly the greatest job ever! I have also recently started my own business that I can do from anywhere (mostly from home or anywhere my wifi is), and we have a new puppy! My day entails taking care of the kids and the puppy, running my home business, going to the gym when I can and trying to eat healthy and spending some time with my husband when he’s home.

If I won the lottery I would buy a new, clean car. Emphasis on clean.

If I have any adviece for new crossfitters it would be Don’t give up! And just keep coming back. You’ll get there!

My immediate future goals with CrossFit are to master butterfly chest to bar pullups and FullSizeRenderto string several muscle ups (bar and rings) together in a row.

Favorite: skilled gymnastic movements (HS pushups, muscle ups, etc) and of course heavy lifting of almost any kind. Least fav: snatches. and rowing. Basically cardio in general. Lol!

PIZZA. And wine. Is that even a cheat?

If I could be any animal it would Probably a dog. Specifically at this point, my French Bulldog, June. She is definitely loved.

How and when did you start CrossFit? Kris had been trying to convince Jennifer to come and try out CF for a while. Finally, she found a groupon to go but didn’t want to go to the beginners class alone. She pushed for me and another colleague to join. We went and it was tough- there were squats, but didn’t realize how bad it TRULY was until the next day when I had to get in and out of chairs and sit to use the bathroom! I thought I would never be able to walk normal again! My first beginners class was in March 2014.

What is your greatest memory of CFGB? I would have to say my greatest memory of IMG_3640CFGB is all the times I have been the last one working during a WOD and the other athletes are cheering me on. It is nice to hear and see when we support each other and it gives me motivation to keep pushing even when I want to quit.

What does a day in your life look like? Wake up, DRAG myself out of bed, eat breakfast, feed the dog, head to work. Teach for 7 long exhausting hours, prepare after school for the next day- writing plans, grading papers, or other important work, after work head to the gym where I can relax and relieve the stress of the day! After class is over I head home to eat dinner, feed the dog, an do things around the house. If there is time or energy left in me I will sit and watch a show or 2 before I head to bed.

If you won the lottery what would be your first selfish purchase? This is  a hard one… I would probably go out and buy a corvette or at least rent one for a few hours to drive around town, but it would have to be classic stingray ( my favorite)

If a new member came into your class, what is one piece of advice you would give them on their first day? I would tell them to focus on themselves and never compare yourself to those around you. We are all at different levels with experiences and abilities. TO learn the movements in CF takes time and allow yourself that time to learn, don’t think it will happen over night.

What are some of your future goals? Close future would be to get through wedding plans and my wedding and then find a house. A little futher in the future would be to start a family. If you are looking for gym goals I would have to say working towards muscle ups and stringing together HSPU.

What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit movements? Favorite-pull ups/CTB (as long as my hands dont rip) Least favorite: overhead squats and thrusters.

What’s your favorite cheat food? Anything pasta!!!

What’s your favorite quote? “Just keep swimming.”- Dori

So I’ve attached two pictures.  The first (basketball) I was about 250lbs, which was my magic number to make changes, and the second (derby) I’m around 200.  I started Paleo before Crossfit which helped with some weight loss but it wasn’t until Crossfit that I really noticed changes.  When I was strict paleo I was able to get to 185lbs but as soon as I stopped (or cheated) I’d gain weight back.  I wasn’t really happy with the results feeling/strength wise either.  I liked missing the weight but in order to build the strength I wanted I had to change my eating a little bit.  I sit comfortably at 210 now, stable for the last six months without even trying and seemingly reaching a new PR every couple of weeks.  I’ll take those extra 25lbs for strength all day.

How and when did you start Crossfit?

I played with the idea of Crossfit for a long time before I jumped in, to include buying a Groupon and letting it expire.  It took another Groupon that my wife bought (so I couldn’t waste it) before I started Crossfit in the Fall of 2013.  Beginner Crossfit was enlightening to say the least.  I went to the gym daily before Crossfit and thought I was in good shape, until I wasACC handed a jump rope.  I did what I call double-overs, vice double-unders.  I took a little jump, then another one when the rope came to my feet.  I had no stamina for just regular single jump rope.  Now I can do double-unders but, I still need to work on my stamina.

What is your greatest memory of CFGB?

Murph 2014.  When I joined Crossfit I was only able to do 2-3 pull-ups total but I  really wanted to participate in this WOD.  I expected to get timed without even getting close to starting the last mile but, I made it out the door before time expired.  When I started the run, another athlete caught up to me (which wasn’t that hard to do but, he just did the MURPH as well) and he set my pace for the entire final mile.  To me this was the start of being a part of the comradery that Crossfit people always talk about.  I am an introvert by nature but I don’t feel that way in Crossfit.

What does a day in the life of you look like?

KIDS.  I do Crossfit at 5:15 in the morning, then head to work.  After work it’s really my two boys.  Whether it’s helping with homework/chores, taking them to whichever sport is in season’s practice, getting my oldest to Crossfit Kids, taking them to music lessons and/or school functions.  My wife and I are usually going different directions with the kids and really only spend time together after nine at night.  No matter what though, if all four of us are in the house for dinner, we stop everything and enjoy us.

If you won the lottery what would be your first selfish purchase?

Season tickets for the Seahawks, and maybe a Tesla X.

If a new member came into your class, what is one piece of advice you would give them on their first day?

Don’t compare yourself to anyone else in the room.  I had a hard time doing that in the Derbybeginning and would get upset if I wasn’t doing the same weight/rep count as someone else when I thought I could.  After Murph, it became obvious that I was wasting my time not focusing on my own achievements and from there on I stopped comparing.

What are some of your future goals?

My number one goal is to be healthy/fit for my kids for a number of reasons but most importantly to be around for them as they grow.  I was separated from the Navy after having emergency open-heart surgery to replace a valve that was covered with Staph.  I was told by every doctor I saw for 9 months that if I wasn’t in as good of shape as I was being a rescue swimmer, I’d be dead.  That drives me to be ready for the next possible issue that I may face.

On a lighter side though, I want to get on the Leader Board and continue to get PR’s!

What is your favorite and least favorite crossfit movements

I love anything shoulder to overhead.  I despise box jumps, which I think is mutual, and anything that involves running.  I really don’t like any of them until I’m done with the WOD, then they’re okay again.

What’s your favorite cheat food?

I usually don’t restrict food to where I would consider it a cheat however; I can easily over indulge in some pizza or ice cream.

If you could be any animal what would it be?

A honey badger, we all know why.

What’s your favorite quote?

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”  – Jackie Robinson

Susan Cox

wellness one : November 13, 2015 1:43 pm : Testimonials

How and when did you start Crossfit?

About 8-10 years ago, my son started doing CrossFit and became a Level 1 certified  coach.  He encouraged me to try, but I thought those crossfitters were crazy people! And besides I was hooked on my Step classes.  However, when Wellness One started Crossfit, I thought I’d give it a try…and here we are 5 years later!!!

What is your greatest memory of CFGB?

There are many, but probably my greatest one was completing “Murph” this past 100_6992Memorial Day.  As I was running the last mile, I kept thinking of all those men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, and said to myself “I can do this”!

What does a day in the life of Susan look like?

Every weekday, I get up at 5:15 am and have some quiet time to pray and gear up for the day. I get ready for work, have a good breakfast and go to work at a Chesapeake middle school where I am the principal’s secretary!  Most days are crazy, so I am more than ready to hit CFGB for a late afternoon CrossFit class!!!

If you won the lottery what would be your first selfish purchase?

Some really nice workout clothes!

If a new member came into your class, what is one piece of advice you would give them on their first day?

I always make a point of chatting with new CrossFitters.  I tell them to remember to make each workout their own, and not to compare themselves with others.  We all progress at different rates and we all have different goals.  I also tell them how wonderful it is to work out with people and coaches who are so encouraging!

What are some of your future goals?

My main goal is to keep coming to CrossFit at least 4 times per week and continuing to IMG_1471make gains!  Secondly, I’d like to climb a rope one day!

What is your favorite and least favorite crossfit movements

I love deadlifts! I hate thrusters!

What’s your favorite cheat food?

I love a nice chilled glass of Chardonnay! (or two)

If you could be any animal what would it be?

I like being a person!

What’s your favorite quote?

I have two:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”

“Be joyful always. Pray continually. In everything give thanks.  For this is the will of Christ Jesus for you!”

image005Joining Crossfit & CFGB was one of the best decisions of my life. Not only am I more disciplined, have a better understanding of nutrition, and can now do 10 burpees without dying, but I feel great and have meet some of the best people in the process.

How and when did you start Crossfit?

Sara (Kerns) kept talking about this fun workout thing she did and asked if I wanted to do it too. I mean, who wouldn’t want to work out with Sara and have fun at the same time? I started crossfit at CFGB May 2014 and eventually convinced Austin to join J

What is your greatest memory of CFGB?

There are quite a few, but my top ones would be: The first time I did a legit pull up without a band & then competing in the Valentine’s day wod with Austin (& then later switching out our 3rd place medal with Mark’s 1st place medal and seeing how long it took him to notice. J)

What does a day in you life look like?

Work, Gym and then usually putting off things like laundry and dishes to spend time with Austin.

If you won the lottery what would be your first selfish purchase?

I would probably look into buying a panda on the black market, but then settle for an outrageous trip around the world with Austin.

If a new member came into your class, what is one piece of advice you would give them on their first day? I heard this several times from different people when I first started: It doesn’t get easier, you just get better.  I still have to remind myself of that one. It’s encouraging and dose of reality at the same time. Hey, they should know what they are getting themselves into.

What are some of your future goals?

Handstand push-ups! Pistols! Rx-ing every—okay, most—wods!

What is your favorite and least favorite crossfit movements

Favorite – Split Jerk         Least Favorite – Thrusters. Definitely thrusters.image001

What’s your favorite cheat food?

Chicken Parmesan sub from Mister Jim’s

If you could be any animal what would it be?

A panda. Because they are the cutest, most adorable animals on the planet. Or a cheetah. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to run as fast as Travis.

Jen Clark

wellness one : November 13, 2015 12:41 pm : Testimonials

How and when did you start crossfit? IMG_36412014 after watching Kris and Jamie compete at Team Grit. I loved the support from all of the athletes and friends of CFGB

What is your greatest memory of CFGB? I loved when steve, andrea, kris, and dave were doing a work out for the team series last fall. andrea had to hold a handstand while steve did deadlifts, i thought she was going to die… or kill him. He was moving so slowly. Then she imitated him doing the movement. He does do everything rather slowly.

What does a day in the life of Jenn look like? I get up at 5:58 am get cleaned up and dressed for work, eat a healthy breakfast of eggs and sausage to work with Kris, we work with students until 2:19 and get ready for the next days lessons, change for the gym and go to the 4:00 class/ I stretch drink my protein shake and go home to eat dinner. I take a bath, look over lessons for the next day, watch General Hospital, play on my ipad and wait for the WOD to be released about 9:30. I text my peeps about what weights I should do and go to bed by 10.

If you won the lottery what would be your first selfish purchase? I wouldn’t make a purchase. I would turn in my notice at work for myself and Kris. Then I would pay for Kris to get CrossFit certified.

If a new member came into your class, what is one piece of advice you would give them on their first day? No one is watching you! Trust me on this. Everyone is in their own zone until the end and then everyone is congratulating each other. If I can do it, any one can do it!

What are some of your future goals? I would love to look fit. I would like to be able to string double unders together every time I pick up the rope.

What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit movements? Favorite movements are handstand push ups and toes to bar. Least favorite movements are snatches and overhead squats.

What’s your favorite cheat food? Potato chips but I dont even remember what they taste like.

If you could be any animal what would it be? Killer whale.

Whats your favorite quote? “How do you spell love?” asked Piglet. “You don’t spell love, you feel it.” Pooh
